German leader argues for preserving Iran deal

Canceling a nuclear agreement between world powers and Iran would be wrong, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said, adding that the us withdrawal from the deal was among several pieces of "troubling news" that had occurred recently. While reiterating earlier criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear accord, Merkel however argued that close transatlantic relations in this context retained value regardless of recent disagreements between the European Union (EU) and the Trump administration. "But we still think that, with the agreement, we would have better preconditions to speak with Iran about further agreements than by unilaterally canceling an agreement that was unanimously approved and endorsed in the U.N. Security Council".

Repudiating the result of more than a decade of diplomacy, Trump complained that the deal does not cover Iran's ballistic missiles, its role in regional wars or what happens after the pact begins to expire in 2025.

The statement came a week after President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would withdraw from the JCPOA despite the fact that Iran remained in compliance with the deal as verified by the IAEA in 11 inspection reports.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Hassan Rohani said on May 16 that Tehran will not flag under US pressure.

He also said Iran would not surrender to United States pressures.

Major European powers have sought to keep Iran in a landmark worldwide nuclear agreement after President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the pact and promised tough economic sanctions against Tehran. "The Iranian nation will resist the US plots", Iranian news agencies quoted Rohani as saying.

Merkel said the Europeans aren't "blind" to threats posed by Iran's activities in Syria to Israel, for example.

The Europeans and Iranians have tasked experts to come up with measures quickly and will meet again in Vienna next week.
