Williams helps Pirates shut out struggling Sox

The Sox have matched the poorest 38-game start in team history.

For Wednesday's game, the Sox will be bringing out LHP Hector Santiago. Catcher Francisco Cervelli left the game at the end of the third inning with right forearm discomfort.

There was no immediate word on the severity of Marte's injury, though both players nearly certainly will be held out of the Wednesday 12:35 p.m. finale of this two-game series with Chicago.

Kyle Crick and Richard Rodriguez completed the seven-hitter for Pittsburgh's major league league-best seventh shutout.

Pirates 7, White Sox 0.

The Pirates will go for a sweep of this two-game set and all four games between the interleague clubs Wednesday. The Pirates had 10 hits Tuesday.

"One through nine, we're all doing damage", said Pittsburgh's Josh Bell, who drove in three runs with two doubles.

Pirates: CF Starling Marte left the game at the end of the first inning with discomfort in his right side. There was no update on their status.

White Sox: Second baseman Yoan Moncada (left hamstring tightness) was activated from the disabled list and went 1 for 4. He was 1-for-4.

In a couple of starts earlier this month, Santiago put up 10 earned over 8.0 innings on 11 hits.

Reynaldo Lopez (0-3) gave up six runs and seven hits with two walks in two-plus innings. Williams has just a 35/20 K/BB ratio over 53 innings this season, but he's now won five games and will carry a 2.72 ERA and 1.13 WHIP into Sunday's outing against the Padres at home. May.

"I pulled a lot of fastballs, which is weird for me because usually if I miss then I'm missing up and away or up and in to a lefty", Santiago said. "I thought it was just two pitches that left the yard. Probably felt too good".

"It's tough in the short term to come out of a game, but, hopefully, by coming out when I did, we've kind of mitigated it. ..."

"I thought we did our homework well last time", he said. On Tuesday, Marte had one hit snd a run.

He is 0-3 in six ensuing starts, including giving up a season-high seven runs in 3 2/3 innings April 25 against Detroit. As for Taillon, he left his last start due to a finger laceration but seems to be okay.
