Thousands of teachers expected to march in Raleigh Wednesday

Hundreds of Pitt County teachers will be among 15,000 expected to gather in Raleigh today to demonstrate for more funding for public schools as the General Assembly begins its session. One less day of instruction does not help students.

But that doesn't mean the fight will end Wednesday. But groups such as the North Carolina Association of Educators, which is organizing the march, say teachers are doing what's allowed under state law.

"The ultimate goal is to elect more pro-public education leaders in North Carolina and to have long-term, sustainable victories".

More than three dozen school districts - from the 10 largest to many smaller ones in rural areas - that educate more than two-thirds of the state's 1.5 million public school students have made a decision to close classrooms as a result, according to the Associated Press.

"We are extremely aware that disrupting family routines puts a burden on parents". It's a Tar Heel tradition for many trade groups to invite members to Raleigh at least once a year for meetings with state lawmakers. "I think the people of North Carolina don't fully support that sort of action".

It depends on whom you ask.

North Carolina's teacher salaries rank 35th nationwide, but teachers there have seen the value of their wages fail to keep up with cost of living increases over the past two decades.

The state's per-pupil spending is $2,400 behind the national average, according to the NCAE. Turning an advocacy day into a protest march may have the opposite effect, driving a wedge between teachers and legislators. He cited the same National Education Association data, which shows North Carolina teachers had the nation's second-highest teacher pay increase between 2016 and 2017.

North Carolina is latest in a string of states where teachers have gone on strike to push for higher pay and better conditions.

But funding for both are on the rise. House Speaker Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, and Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, in the statement ahead of the rally said the increase will be the fifth consecutive raise for teachers.

"That's more than a lot of people out there in the private sector are getting", Moore said.

Support for our public schools, our children and our hardworking teachers transcends the left-right paradigm.

"Many teachers and staff are requesting leave on May 16th and there is a shortage of available substitutes to cover the anticipated teacher absences", the post read in part. On Wednesday May 16, 2018, Alexander County Schools will be closed for students with an optional workday for all staff.
