Riau Police succeeded in stopping attack: National Police

Several masked men attacked the Riau Police headquarters at around 9 a.m. on Wednesday with sharp weapons and firearms, killing one police officer and injuring another.

"Four of them got out of the vehicle and tried to fight a group of police with samurai swords", Nandan, who uses only one name, said in a live interview with local television station TV One.

Police fielded a bomb squad team to inspect the attackers' vehicle.

National police spokesman Setyo Wasisto says the men attacked officers Wednesday after driving a minivan into Riau province's police headquarters.

Earlier, an internal police report said that one of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body.

"The one who escaped has been captured and secured at Pekanbaru police station", Wasisto said.

Lightning avenge home losses with Game 3 win at Capitals
There was a time when the Washington Capitals couldn't be trusted to advance past the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. They also surrendered a 6-on-5 goal to Evgeny Kuznetsov with 3:02 left that made things interesting in the final minutes.

TV footage showed one man lying on the ground with a long sword next to his body.

The attack comes as the Southeast Asian nation has been rocked by a series of deadly attacks on churches and a police station, involving multiple suicide bombings carried out by families, including young children.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for both attacks.

Police have been frequent targets of mostly low level attacks by local militants, including a 2017 suicide bombing at a bus station in Jakarta that killed three police officers.

The attacks are the worst in the world's biggest Muslim-majority country since the bombing of tourist-packed restaurants in Bali in 2005.
