Los Angeles Will be Verizon's 2nd 5G Market for 2018

Los Angeles is the second city Verizon has identified as part of its 3-5 market 5G deployment plans, first announced in November 2017. In the past, the carrier has said that 5G is coming to three to five cities this year, and now it's putting a stake in the ground at four.

5G "is a lot closer than people think", Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam, told CNBC. During it, McAdam pointed toward "progressive-minded cities" - LA and Sacramento among them - as a key part of the company's plans.

Pressed on what the rollout will look like, McAdam said that Verizon will "literally have over 1,000 cell sites up and operating on the global standard".

Still, he smiled ear-to-ear as he went down the receiving line in the dugout, high-fiving each of his teammates after staking them to a 3-0 lead.

Los Angeles will be a far more challenging area to deploy 5G in than Sacramento, which is 69% less densely populated than LA. LA mayor Eric Garcetti said it will be a great opportunity for residents and business, likewise helping "inspire the next generation of tech leaders and entrepreneurs". An exact rollout date for the LA launch wasn't provided, though Verizon indicates it will start this upcoming fall season.

Verizon said to expect Los Angeles to get 5G in the fourth quarter of this year.

"The beauty of how we're architecting our network is it's a multi-purpose network, so whether we offer fixed wireless or mobile or an enterprise service, it doesn't matter", McAdam told CNBC.
