In its first months on the air, Designated Survivor drew large audiences, setting DVR lift records and snagging the Critics' Choice Award for most exciting new series in its first season.

According to Deadline, the talks are in the early stages and are complicated because Hulu has the US SVOD rights.

While not a massive hit in terms of live ratings or critical adulation, Designated Survivor has become a cult favourite since arriving on the Netflix platform. Huge. So we suspected, upon hearing about the series' cancellation, that it would try anything and everything to work this out, and it looks like that's now happening in earnest.

The news was somewhat surprising, as the show had been expected to receive a season three renewal; although live ratings weren't particularly strong, its delayed viewing numbers were impressive, and it had been profitable for the network thanks to its global distribution deal with Netflix.

"I think, ultimately, we were less confident about the creative path forward than with the other shows we brought back".

If the show gets a third season, a new showrunner would be introduced, marking the show's fifth person in the job.
