Cauvery: MB Patil accuses Centre of cheating the people of Karnataka

The state will submit its views on the scheme to the apex court on May 16.

The court had also ordered setting up of the Cauvery Management Board to monitor the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu by Karnataka by March 30.

Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are having water sharing dispute of Cauvery River.

The Centre was also asked to drop the clause that said that the Centre would give directions from time to time to the implementing authority - a clause which was objected to by Tamil Nadu. However, the Supreme Court has also asked the Centre to file a modified scheme by Thursday.

PMK founder S. Ramadoss said the draft scheme did not involve the power to implement the award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal. This is the seventh consecutive year that the Mettur dam can not be opened for irrigation on the scheduled date (June 12) mostly because of Karnataka's failure to release the quantum of water stipulated in the Tribunal award.

He said a media staging area will occur around 10:30-11 a.m. this morning at the Peoria Avenue bridge, but the time may change. Students were originally taken to the nearby Armory following the incident and are being bused to the baseball field.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said that for years, Karnataka had been fighting to ensure that the Cauvery Management Board was not constituted as it would be harmful to the State's interest. In its verdict on February 16, the Supreme Court had reduced Tamil Nadu's share of water from the river Cauvery while Karnataka's part got a boost.

The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) floated by Kamal Haasan has also called an all party meeting here on May 19.

All these decisions were taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and attended by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and four ministers.

It is not known what was Rajinikanth's response to the invite.
