Chuck Knox, former Seattle Seahawks, LA Rams coach, dies at 86

Chuck Knox, a longtime National Football League coach who won 186 regular-season games, died Sunday at age 86, the Seattle Seahawks confirmed.

Knox was an offensive line coach before landing the Rams' job in 1973 and going 12-2, the first of five straight 10-win seasons with the franchise. His name was added to the Ring of Honor at Qwest Field during the Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks game in Seattle on September 24 2005. His 80 victories with Seattle are second to Mike Holmgren's 86. Knox's Tremendous Bowl goals ended there, because the Seahawks misplaced to the eventual champion Los Angeles Raiders.

"His presence projected an external toughness, but merited instantaneous respect by the genuine care and concern he held for his players", the Seahawks said in a statement. "He was one of many nice influences not exclusively in soccer, however in life".

Knox's granddaughter, Lee Ann, originally announced the news on Twitter.

Knox was at the helm for the Bills from 1978-1982. He also earned the coveted Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award three times over his 22-year career. "He always took the time to know each player well enough that he could talk to each player and hit their hot buttons". "It was as insane and as fun a locker room as I had ever seen, and as enjoyable a flight home as the Seahawks have ever had until they won a Super Bowl Championship".

In their statement, the Rams said that Knox "established a winning culture and a legacy that will never be forgotten, being the only coach to lead the Rams to five consecutive double-digit-win seasons".
