Reuters subsequently quoted Al-Arabiya TV as identifiying the diplomat as the Consul-General and describing his death as an "assassination".

The Nigerian government on Friday said it has launched an investigation into the killing of a diplomat serving in the Nigerian Mission in Sudan.

The statement said: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received an official report from our Mission in Khartoum, Sudan on the death of the Immigration Attaché I in the Mission, Habibu Almu".

"We have to wait for a formal report from our mission detailing how it happened", Nigerian foreign ministry spokesman Tiwatope Elias-Fatile told AFP.
