Trump Blasts China, Russia for Devaluing Currencies as Fed Hikes

Borodin's friend, Vyacheslav Bashkov, wrote on Facebook that Borodin contacted him early in the morning on April 11 and said his building was surrounded by armed "siloviki", or Russian security services, wearing camouflage and face masks.

He said the door to Borodin's apartment was locked from the inside and there was no sign of forced entry.

Miksim Borodin, who published a number of stories about the deaths of dozens of alleged Russian mercenaries who attempted to storm a US facility in Syria in February, died Sunday after falling five stories from his Yekaterinburg apartment balcony April 12.

Bashkov said that Borodin had called back an hour later and said he had been mistaken and that he thought the armed men were probably taking part in a training exercise.

Paulina Rumyantseva, editor-in-chief of Ria Novy Den, said Borodin's fall could have been the result of foul play or an accident. "But he didn't write anything; and on the 13th, the media reported that Maksim had been found under his balcony and he was in the emergency room". But suicide, she said, was an unlikely cause. Last October, an assailant reportedly hit Borodin over the head with a steel pipe shortly after he'd reported on a controversial movie about Tsar Nicholas II.

Meanwhile in February, Mr Borodin reported as many as 200 Wagner fighters killed in battle with United States soldiers in Syria.

Russian oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin is suspected of bankrolling the Wagner Group. But he also suggested that the journalist most likely committed suicide out of desperation: Volkov said that Borodin wanted to move to Moscow, hoping to find an outlet that would give him more freedom to write.

Thousands of Wagner mercenaries are allegedly involved in military operations in Syria. In February, he broke a story about Russian mercenaries who died in an armed confrontation with USA forces near Deir-Ezzor, Syria. As the New Yorker noted, it was the first time in half a century that Russian and USA military forces had engaged in direct combat.

Russian authorities are investigating the fall that lead to the death of a 32-year-old investigative journalist as an accident or something else but not as a crime.

But Harlem Desir, the representative for freedom of the media at the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe said Borodin's death was "of serious concern".

Russia ranks first in the European Federation of Journalists list of countries with the highest number of journalists murdered in Europe.
