Samsung to Make an iPhone X Style Phone Notch

Samsung to Make an iPhone X Style Phone Notch

On the bright side, Samsung, which once drew flak for aping Apple mobile design, got hailed for sticking to the original Infinity Display design in the latest Galaxy S9 series.

As global handset profits dipped 1 per cent (year-on-year) in the fourth quarter of 2017, Apple X alone generated 35 per cent of the total handset industry profits, helping the iPhone maker grow 1 per cent (YoY) in the same quarter, a new report said on Tuesday.

The South Korean tech giant has submitted a patent application for a design of a smartphone that features the infamous notch on the display. Above the display is a rectangular cutout where the front-facing camera, earpiece speaker and sensors are located.

To sum it up, an early production plan from Samsung could only mean good news for the customers as it literally translates to earlier dates and more devices available on the markets for the customers to buy. The 5.8- and 6.5-inch OLED iPhone models will likely sport stacked board designs like iPhone X, while the 6.1-inch LCD model will stick to a traditional single-layer layout. Samsung has recently filed a patent with Chinese patent organization SIPO that shows off a few different phone designs each with a notch above the phone's screen and an in-display fingerprint scanner. The bottom of the device features a USB Type-C port, a speaker grille and the 3.5mm headphone jack. It looks like Samsung might have found a way to hide the front-camera too.

The notch design has been a contentious topic among smartphone users. Notches became a lot more popular thanks to the Apple iPhone X. In fact, more Android manufacturers are putting notches on their recent releases due to Apple's 10th anniversary handset. This is only a patent filing and there is no official pronouncement of future designs.

Hardcore Android fans hate the notch. Samsung has filed a patent for a phone that features a 99 percent screen-to-body ratio.
