Mainz vs. Freiburg affected by VAR farce, toilet-roll torrent

The 2-0 win sees Mainz leapfrog Freiburg in the Bundesliga table on goal difference, climbing out of the relegation zone at the expense of their defeated opponents.

Following a delay of over six minutes De Blasis scored the penalty in the bottom left corner and Winkmann blew again for half-time, during which the unfortunate Kempf was substituted.

Referee Guido Winkmann called both sides back from the dressing room after consulting the video assistant referee (VAR) system and penalising Freiburg for handball.

The penalty was given for a handball by Marc-Oliver Kempf that the VAR noticed after the halftime whistle had blown.

He ordered both sets of players back onto the pitch so that the penalty could be taken.

Footage from broadcaster Eurosport during the incident showed that players from both teams were already in their respective dressing rooms when Winkmann requested they return to the field. One Freiburg player could even be heard saying: "No, we're not coming back out".

It was not related to the penalty decision but instead a protest against Bundesliga fixtures being played on Monday nights.

The game itself may have been otherwise unremarkable, but that didn't stop the fans from creating a spectacle of their own as they continued to display their displeasure with Monday night games.

De Blasis eventually added a second goal for the hosts late in the game following a mistake by Freiburg keeper Alexander Schwolow.

The game kicked off and, for 45 minutes, not a great deal happened.

The second half was delayed by fans throwing toilet paper onto the pitch.
