Kathua rape-murder case: Trials begin today

MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Lucknow late on Friday over allegations that he raped a teenager in Unnao past year.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the Unnao rape case, is all set to take accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar to Unnao on Sunday afternoon with the agency producing the co-accused Shashi Singh for taking her in remand too.

"We are not seeking transfer of investigation". The action came barely hours the Allahabad High Court ordered the probe agency to arrest Sengar, stating that he was influencing the "law-and-order machinery".

CBI sources here on Sunday said they will take the legislators and others to Unnao for an on the spot visit.

The third case is related to the alleged attack on the teenager's father on April 3 by the MLA's brother, who was charged him with voluntarily causing hurt after a brawl.The father died on April 9 during treatment while in judicial custody.

A case was then registered on the complaint of Assistant Commissioner, Customs (Marine and Preventive), Mumbai who stated that private individuals were offering him a bribe, the official said. While framing charges against the three accused on August 1, 2017, investigating officer in his charge-sheet relied upon girl's statement before magistrate and medical examination report that confirmed signs of sexual violence on girl's body.

The Supreme Court today did not favour handing over the investigation into the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua from the crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police to the CBI as her father expressed satisfaction over the investigation carried out so far. Despite several attempts, the victim failed to register a case.

On Apr 8, the rape victim along with his family tried to commit suicide in front of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence in Lucknow.
