Here's Why Nick Saban Couldn't Hire Hugh Freeze

Here's Why Nick Saban Couldn't Hire Hugh Freeze

Freeze abruptly resigned from his post as Ole Miss' head football coach in July after an alleged phone call to an escort service was made public.

It was only a few days after Saban's mid-January meeting with Freeze that he learned he couldn't make the hire.

Alabama football coach Nick Saban's plan to hire former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze was reportedly killed by the SEC.'s John Talty and Matt Zenitz reported Alabama was one of "at least five SEC schools" that talked to the disgraced Rebels coach about possible on-field jobs.

Per the report, Sankey told Alabama that hiring Freeze would be a bad look for the conference as a whole while his previous program, Ole Miss, suffered from NCAA penalties.

Instead of hiring Freeze, Alabama hired Penn State's Josh Gattis as its co-OC and WRs coach. The Crimson Tide have former Tennessee coach Butch Jones on its staff.

A conference bylaw gives the commissioner oversight of schools' hiring decisions. This is a result of Freeze's dismissal from Ole Miss and the NCAA infractions that took place at the school while he was there.

Freeze is now facing a two-game suspension if he is hired as a head coach before November 30 due to NCAA infractions. The conference wants Freeze to go dark for a while and stay out of the spotlight.

"We have seen especially in basketball that coaches who get their programs into NCAA hot water, if they are a good coach, they'll get another job fairly quick", Abrams said.

It appears that won't happen for Freeze in the SEC in 2018.

"I really believe I have a lot to offer a program whether as an assistant or a head coach, and I'm hopeful it's very soon", Freeze told Rachel Baribeau of Gridiron Now in December.

De Blasis eventually added a second goal for the hosts late in the game following a mistake by Freiburg keeper Alexander Schwolow. It was not related to the penalty decision but instead a protest against Bundesliga fixtures being played on Monday nights.
