Pentagon gives Syrian strike details and calls out Russian disinformation trolls

Pentagon officials said the strike involved about twice the assets of a one-time strike in April 2017 in response to a similar chemical attack, blamed on Syria, on a civilian target.

"As Secretary Mattis said last night, the Russian disinformation campaign has already begun", Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said in a press conference.

"This operation was carefully orchestrated and methodically planned to minimize potential collateral damage".

'I can't help you with what the Syrians are saying but I what I am telling you is what actually happened, ' the General said.

'We don't want to get into a fight with them and they don't want to get into a fight with us and the best way [to avoid that] is to share information but we are not cooperating with them, ' he said.

"This operation does not represent a change in USA policy, nor an attempt to depose the Syrian regime".

The U.S. had no coordination or agreements with Russians before the strike, McKenzie said.

It said a second airstrike by the USA and its allies destroyed a warehouse west of the western city of Homs, where Assad's government was storing its main reserves of sarin gas, one of the substances purportedly used in the alleged chemical attacks.

Despite severely damaging the infrastructure with the strikes, McKenzie said the Pentagon would not rule out that the Assad government still had capability to use such weapons again.

A third airstrike targeted a storage site for chemical weapons equipment and a command post, both of which also were located near Homs.

McKenzie said that Syria did launch 40 unguided surface-to-air missiles (SAM) after the US -led operation was over, and alluded to the possibility that Assad's 40 SAMs could have hit his own people because the Syrian missiles "had to come down somewhere".

"We will not stand by passively while Assad, backed by Russian Federation and Iran, ignores global law", White said.

Last night an official from the Assad regime had boasted the strikes will have had little effect. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military.

While underscoring US intentions to hold Russian Federation and Syria accountable for the latest chemical weapons attack, Trump also emphasized that the USA mission in Syria was not open-ended.

The United States, along with Britain and France, launched joint airstrikes on military targets in Syria on Saturday for its alleged use of chemical weapons in Douma, the last rebel-held town in Eastern Ghouta near the Syrian capital, earlier this month.
