Stoltenberg also commented on the Turkish-led Operation Olive Branch, the fight against terrorism and Syria, emphasising the importance of Turkey as an ally.

"There were efforts for an independent investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria but Russian Federation prevented it", Stoltenberg said.

Stoltenberg arrived in the Turkish capital Ankara on April 16 for official talks in the wake of the US -led airstrikes in Syria.

The three allies briefed North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ambassadors at a special session at the alliance headquarters and won support from the other 26 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members, who sought more diplomatic pressure to uphold an global ban on poison gas attacks like the one the West believes the regime conducted on April 7 in Douma.

Ankara is hosting negotiations between the Minister of National Defense of Turkey Nurettin Canikli and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the Turkish Defense Ministry said in a message April 16.

"Greece and Turkey are two highly valued North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies" and "both contribute to our collective defense", he said adding that the recent tension is "not an issue for NATO". No further details were given about the gathering.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders are also working on establishing a training mission in Iraq; one of the key issues to be discussed with President Erdogan, the defense minister, and the country's foreign minister.

The strikes followed the regime's alleged chemical attack in Douma, which killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others.
