Lieutenant General Angus Campbell named as Australia's next Defence chief

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will today announce Lieutenant General Angus Campbell will replace Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin in the top defence job in July.

Along with his role as head of Operation Sovereign Borders aimed at stopping people-smugglers, Lieutenant General Angus Campbell played a key part in the United Nations efforts to restore peace and order in East Timor.

Campbell has served as the chief of army since 2015.

Mr Turnbull made the announcement shortly before departing for meetings with Commonwealth leaders in London.

"The leadership renewal of the Australian Defence Force... will ensure that we have a seamless transition in the uniformed leadership of our defence forces at a critical time in our history, where our forces are engaged in complex and unsafe missions in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world", Turnbull said.

[It is] a critical time in our history, where our forces are engaged in complex and risky missions in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world.

When asked by reporters if he would take a more "open" approach with the media in his new Defence role, General Campbell said only that his approach would be "appropriate to the position and to the relationship between the Australian Defence Force and the media".

He said it would be a "extraordinary responsibility" but he will do his best for the ADF.

Vice Admiral Griggs is expected to retire from the military.

Mr. Turnbull said the appointment came at a critical time, with Australia undertaking the largest modernisation of its defence capabilities in its peacetime history.
