Kolkata Metro rake stranded inside tunnel due to snag

There was panic among commuters following repeated sparks and sudden darkness inside a Kolkata Metro Railway rake here on Sunday night.

The incident happened around 9.30 pm when the south-bound non-AC metro rake developed a major electrical snag, Kolkata Metro CPRO Indrani Banerjee said.

It took nearly 20 minutes to evacuate all the passengers from the rake and metro officials claimed that no one fell sick. As a result, services along the Tollygunge-Kavi Subhas route were disrupted for almost 20 minutes because of the power failure. Many children traveling in the train for terrified and started crying.

A passenger claimed they had informed the driver earlier when they noticed sparks, but he did not pay heed to their complaint, IANS reported. "There was an announcement in the public address system asking the passengers to get out of the train quickly", added a passenger. We raised an alarm, but nobody listened to us.

Reporteldy, services were halted for sometime in the Tollygunge-Kavi Subhas section, as the train was stopped at Netaji station, where senior Metro officials went to inspect the train for the source of the power-trip. "We are investigating the matter", she added. "Yet some passengers broke the windows", said a Metro spokesperson.

After the incident, the metro services along the line remained disrupted for around half-an-hour, said a Lalbazar officer.
