Kerwynn Williams will sign with Chiefs

On the surface, the move might be a head-scratcher.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chiefs will sign former Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams.

Williams, 26, was a former seventh-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 and has spent the past four years with the Cardinals. The starting job is entrenched with Kareem Hunt, who led the league in rushing as a rookie in 2017, but Spencer Ware - a starter before a season-ending knee injury - is still working his way back.

However he was released by the Chargers before the start of the 2014 season.

With Spencer Ware missing the entire season with a torn PCL previous year, Charcandrick West was the second-leading running back with a mere 18 carries and 72 yards.

So what about Kerwynn Williams? Williams is another return option for the Chiefs and not so much a running back, someone who can fit with Hunt in training camp to compete for that special teams role as a potential returner with wide receivers Tyreek Hill (punts) and De'Anthony Thomas (kicks).

Arizona Cardinals running back Kerwynn Williams (33) runs as New York Giants linebacker Kelvin Sheppard (47) makes the tackle during the first half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, in Glendale, Ariz.

Williams signed a two-year, $1.1 million contract with the Cardinals in 2015, but became an unrestricted free agent after the 2017 season.

If released, Akeem Hunt would give the Chiefs just over $700K of cap space without any dead money to worry about.
