Gas prices continue to climb, Lansing drivers see spike at the pump

Brent crude oil prices have increased, in part, due to OPEC countries intentionally scaling back production.

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) is forecasting the average price for a gallon of gas will hit $2.74 this summer, the highest level in four years. "With the transition to summer gasoline also wrapping up, the reasons gas prices to rise will shrink".

$2.12 per gallon in 2017, $1.91 in 2016, $2.18 in 2015, $3.47 in 2014 and $3.29 in 2013.

At the close of NYMEX trading Friday, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil settled at $67.39 per barrel, up $5.33 from the previous week. Although crude oil production and inventory quantities in the USA rose this week, the possible impact on supply from Middle East tension continues to loom.

The auto club, based out of Dearborn, announced the average price of gas in MI last week was about $2.78, compared to about $2.68 last week. Metro Detroit's average is about 26 cents more than this same time past year. The agency is forecasting an average gas price of $2.64/gal for all of 2018.

Including the change in gas prices in Chattanooga during the past week, prices on Sunday were 32.6 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 20.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.
