Eurovision victor Conchita reveals HIV diagnosis

Eurovision victor Conchita Wurst has revealed that she has HIV and has been receiving treatment for it for several years.

The 29-year-old, an Austrian drag queen who found worldwide fame after winning the competition in 2014 with the song Rise Like a Phoenix, informed fans of her diagnosis on Instagram, stating that she had made a decision to go public after an ex-boyfriend threatened to do so.

She stated she had determined to come back out with the information herself earlier than her pal did.

"Coming out is better than being outed by someone else".

She said that she was making her status public after an ex-boyfriend threatened to publicly out her.

Wurst said that she had been receiving medical treatment since her diagnosis and that it had been suppressed to undetectable levels, so it could not be transmitted. I hope to build up courage and take another step against the stigmatization of people who have become infected by HIV, either through their own behaviour or through no fault of their own.

Wolfgang Wilhelm, president of AIDS Hilfe Wien, an organization in Vienna that campaigns for people with H.I.V. and AIDS, said, "That the outing of Conchita was caused by blackmailing shows how much people still fear discrimination and stigma".

Wurst, who received the singing contest in 2014 with the tune Rise Like A Phoenix, wrote that she had acquired medical remedy and that she was feeling wholesome and robust.

"Threatening to reveal someone's HIV status, under any circumstances, is entirely wrong". What different well being situation can be used as blackmail towards somebody? "And we know this isn't something which only happens to those in the public eye".
