Destroyed Hamas tunnel network in Gaza

The Israeli Army on Sunday claimed to have discovered and destroyed a tunnel allegedly extending tens of metres into Israel from Gaza and that belonged to the Islamist movement Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip.

The most recent discovery was of a passage running "kilometers" from within Gaza to just over the border, Israel's military said, accusing the enclave's dominant Hamas group of being behind the project.

It is understood the man has lived in Gracetown for some time, with one friend describing him as "an awesome guy". When emergency crews arrived, the victim was treated and then airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital via helicopter.

Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman tweeted that the tunnel was "the longest and deepest exposed thus far", and chided Hamas for spending millions of dollars on building the terror tunnel from "money that would have been better served mitigating the plight of residents, but has now sunk into the sand". Israel has placed a high priority on halting the tunnel threat since Hamas infiltrated Israel during the war.Although they did not manage to reach civilian areas, the infiltrations caught Israel off guard, with one attack killing five soldiers, and terrified the local population.

Since March 30, thousands of peaceful Palestinian demonstrators have set up protest tent camps along the Gaza-Israel border, and the Israeli military has killed at least 33 demonstrators during marches that have taken place near the border each Friday.
