City crowned champions after shocking United loss

Avoiding defeat would have prolonged the inevitable but a second-half header from striker Jay Rodriguez ensured City sealed their fifth top-flight title and first since 2014 with five games remaining - a joint Premier League record.

The Baggies defended well in the closing minutes to claim the victory that hands Man City the title.

After the match, Mourinho made it clear he was unimpressed with his players' efforts, lack of fluidity and desire.

"They lost only two matches [this season] because they were the best team", Mourinho said.

"There was no fluidity".

The target for Jose Mourinho will be to steer Man United into 2nd spot in the table and a win here against doomed West Brom will be a positive step in that direction. "City won the title because they won more points than us, you are not going to say that they won because we gave them the title. that's not fair to them", Mourinho said.

"I don't blame [the referee] at all, it's a penalty and nothing else and we deserve to be punished not. defeat is too heavy but we deserve to be punished".

So in a way, after not being able to clinch the title last week against Manchester United and getting eliminated in the Champions League by Liverpool, clinching the Premier League without playing will seem bittersweet.

His decision to forego the match looked justified considering West Brom's awful form, but the visitors easily coped with United's ponderous attacks and looked unsafe going forward.

"It's a big disappointment".

He said, "He saw that result way before we saw it". "Everyone is disappointed. We didn't play well at all and it's a bad afternoon for us".

"Things have probably gone a little bit by the wayside this season but it's really important we continue to fight, work hard for each other and show that fighting spirit we showed today". After all, West Brom had lost eight of their previous nine games and last won on January 13. The rest of the squad was spread out across Europe, and even beyond, on their day off after City's 3-1 win at Tottenham on Saturday night had left the league title agonisingly close.

"Second position was not done before the game", Mata told United's website.

"This was a big game today, we've got another next week and we need to focus on that".
