A state-wide bandh has begun in Andhra Pradesh on Monday called by the Andhra Pradesh Pratyeka Hoda Saadhana Samiti over the demand of Special Status for the state. Most of the Opposition parties including YSR Congress (YSRC), Congress and Left parties have extended their support to the shutdown call, but the ruling TDP has opposed it. According to the reports, the outfits such as Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) are also supporting the call for Andhra Pradesh bandh. The leaders of these parties in the city have plans to begin the programme from Maddilapalem Junction at 5 a.m. and block the entire national highway no. 16 and ensure no vehicle passes through the city. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said bandhs hamper development and are not welcome. Reacting to this, the YSRC accused the Chief Minister of adopting "double standards".

Sadhna Samithi Chalasani Srinivas said the "bandh" was in protest against the Narendra Modi government's refusal to grant special status. "Why this intimidation? As long as they are peaceful, we will continue all forms of democratic protests", PTI quoted Rambabu as saying.

Leaders and activists of all opposition parties, barring Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), staged protest demonstrations across the state. On Sunday, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, via a teleconference instructed ministers and state police to "prevent anti-social elements from creating untoward incidents".
