Spieth in his comfort zone, leads by two strokes at Masters

Spieth in his comfort zone, leads by two strokes at Masters

Spieth back where he belongs - Jordan Spieth LOVES Augusta.

He has some catching up to do.

The 42-year-old, a four-time green jacket victor, fought hard to record a one-over-par 73 - seven shots back from leader Jordan Spieth - having been three over at one stage. Next year, or the year after, or five years on, Spieth will be standing on the 12th tee, on Sunday, staring down the exact same tucked pin on the hole that has effectively taken two green jackets away from him already. "It's about riding momentum from last week and this round".

Because Tiger Woods is back at Augusta for the first time since 2015.

Finau's first Masters was in danger of being over before it even started when the 28-year-old suffered what appeared to be a gruesome ankle injury while celebrating a hole-in-one during Wednesday's Par Three contest. On Thursday, he covered those par 5s in even par.

"This golf course specifically, brings out a lot of feel in my game, and I think that's advantageous", he said. "We've got a great plan, and then gearing up myself and getting psyched for them and the right amount of confidence and composure that it takes". It's really hard to run away from it, but it's also really easy to lose it out there.

Birdies on the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th propelled Spieth to the top of the leaderboard, five consecutive birdies his best run of birdies in a major championship. "It was quite insane, all the emotions that I dealt with overnight, but I was more than ecstatic to just be walking to that first tee and be playing in my first Masters". In front of a national TV audience, a clip that has gone viral on the Internet, he popped the ankle back into place and was ready to play after an MRI early Thursday showed no damage.

"This is a moment I've dreamed of my whole life", Finau said. You can just kind of see good things happening, and particularly for him around here. Spieth was among 10 players who broke 70 - a list that included Rory McIlroy - on a warm, sunny day with a moderate breeze that looked ideal for scoring.

Garcia dumped five balls into the water on the par five, where he made an eagle in last year's final round, to record the highest score on the hole in tournament history. He made a 10-foot putt - close to the same length of his eagle putt when he won a year ago - to make a 13, the highest score ever recorded on No. 15. The American won a Green Jacket in just his second start at Augusta and has another two runner-up finishes to his name in just four trips to the Masters.

"It's the first time in my career where I make a 13 without missing a shot", Garcia said.

Northern Irishman McIlroy, going for the final leg of the career grand slam, said his first round score would allow him to be a bit more patient.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson was 1 over, one shot better than Justin Thomas and two ahead of Jason Day.

Spain's Sergio Garcia endured a nightmare start in his bid to join Woods, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to successfully defend the Masters crown.

The biggest draw of the tournament, Tiger Woods, looked like he was in trouble through the first 12 holes. His drive on No. 3 almost reached the green until it rolled back down the slope, and he hit a safe pitch to about 10 feet for birdie. He made bogey from the bunker on No.4. He'd bogey the 5th and 7th before going back under par with an eagle three on the 8th.

"The Masters is the epitome of all your life of playing golf", says one member of the 49er Country Club in Tucson.

And the American insists he feels "fantastic" after battling back from a fourth back surgery previous year. "I played in a major championship again". And I'm right back in this tournament. It backs everybody up, and you've got to be prepared for that.
