A 25-year-old standup paddler was critically injured today after he was bitten by a shark off the Kona Coast near Hualalai, Hawaii island firefighters said.

He was last listed in critical condition.

Hawaii Fire Department Acting West Hawaii Battalion Chief Michael Grace said the man was paddleboarding with his father when he was bumped off the board and bitten by a shark.

The victim was flown to North Hawaii Community Hospital with multiple injuries to a hand and a leg.

The beach had no county lifeguards on duty, but a private safety team was present, KHON reported.

A 25-year-old male was stand-up paddle boarding between 100 yards and 150 yards from shore when he was attacked. A hospital spokeswoman said the man was undergoing surgery, KHON reported. "They recovered him from the ocean.

The bystanders and the staff there at Kukio did a wonderful job and applied some tourniquets before EMS arrived".

Officials on the Big Island of Hawaii were forced to close down Kukio Beach following the attack.

Officials encourage beach goers to be vigilant when getting in the water. Sources say he lost at least one limb.

Public beach access in this area will remain closed today. DLNR spokesman Dan Dennison said a decision to reopen the beaches based on observations will be made Sunday morning, Dennison added.
