A group of 46 students at a Pennsylvania high school, who were given detention for participating in the national school walkout, served their detention on March 17, but not without protest - the group linked arms and, wearing the names of the Parkland victims on their clothes, participated in an unprecedented kind of sit-in. "Working together and being around our friends in such a time of frightful tragedy and suffering, and making sure that nobody else has to go through this suffering, at least try to make sure that they don't, is our way of coping - to ensure the safety and future of many Americans". Students stood on the sidewalk around the school and chanted for 17 minutes, one minute each for the 17 people who died in the Parkland shooting. She said it made her realize that "we should appreciate what we have, appreciate life".

Hogg says leading the movement is helping them cope with the horrific incident at their school in which 17 people were killed.

Numerous students mentioned they have younger siblings who will soon attend the high school and said they want to feel like they will be safe.

"There's always been people who are going to want to harm us", Ms. Gonzalez said. "These kids talk about how it's an important time for them to protest against gun violence and change in our country, and it's just really exciting for me to hear that", Hammond said. They said they're exhausted of shootings being the norm.

Carter said he disagreed, pointing to the news helicopters overhead and the cameras surrounding the them.

"Students around USA stage huge walkout against gun violence" (online March 15) fills me with hope and inspiration. "And then, when we reply, they like shy back away".

"They were loud but sensible", he said.
