Sunderland suspend midfielder Darron Gibson after drink-drive charge

Sunderland have suspended midfielder Darron Gibson after saying he has been charged with drink-driving.

"We expect the highest standard of behaviour from our players", said Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain.

The Black Cats announced they have launched an investigation into an incident in which the 30-year-old Republic of Ireland global was allegedly involved on Saturday. The arrest follows a report of a auto colliding with a number of parked vehicles on Dovedale Road in Sunderland at about 11:55am yesterday.

Vehicles damaged include a Mercedes 4x4, another Mercedes and a white Seat.

It is not the first time that Gibson has been arrested for the offence.
