Delhi metro to be among top five by end 2018

Indicating that there were "issues of financial viability" on some routes, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that his government will soon clear the Delhi Metro's long pending Phase IV expansion project. By the end of 2018, Delhi is expected to add close to 100 km of metro lines, making its metro network the 8th largest in the world.

"Metro is the lifeline of Delhi, and it is an important mode of transport for the city".

The new corridor will connect the South and North Delhi campuses of Delhi University for the first time.

"A DMRC official told the media", With the opening of the more than 20km long section, the Delhi Metro's operational network will expand to around 252 kilometers".

The 21.56 km-long corridor, once unlocked, will also lessen metro travel time between Dwarka Sector-21 (Blue Line) and Rithala (Red Line) by over 16 minutes and Rajouri Garden and Azadpur by nearly 23 minutes, the DMRC asserted. And the train will also run on the shorter routes between Drgabai Deshmuckh South Campus and Shurpur, and Majlis Park and Shakurpur stations.

Azadpur Station (with Yellow Line) is one of the three interchange stations on the Pink Line stretch that opened today, the other two being, Netaji Subhash Place (with Red Line) and Rajouri Garden (Blue Line).

"By June of this year, a majority of the ongoing Phase-III expansion would be opened to the public", said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson Anuj Dayal. Passenger services on the stretch will begin from 6 pm. He suggested through use of technology a way should be found out to give some concession to senior citizens and students and this concession can be given on the lines of the concession which is given by metro at present on Sunday and national holidays. For the first time, travellators have being installed on foot over bridges in the interchange stations of the Pink Line to facilitate seamless commuter movements, such as Rajouri Garden and the under-construction bridge linking Dhaula Kuan to South Campus. The line runs from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar corridor.
