Mike Espy, a Jackson attorney, who in the 1980s became the first African American elected to the U.S. House from MS and later served as secretary of Agriculture in the Bill Clinton administration, already has announced his "intention" to run for the open seat.

Chris McDaniel will now run for the soon-to-be vacant seat of Sen.

In his statement Wednesday, McDaniel stated he's heard from many constituents to run for the seat that will become open April 1.

McDaniel says that he's listening to the people and feels an open seat is the best path to win an election to the United States Senate.

"If we unite the party now and consolidate our resources, we can guarantee Donald Trump will have a fighter who will stand with him", McDaniel said in a statement. "The question is folks, not why Chris McDaniel, but why not?" said Rev. Bryant. At which point Governor Phil Bryant will appoint an interim senator. He also came out swinging against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., ahead of his expected opposition.

"When you look at how the establishment works to keep conservatives like Mo Brooks from winning a U.S. Senate seat only to lose the seat entirely, you have to conclude that Mitch McConnell and his lieutenants would rather lose a seat to a Democrat than elect a conservative", McDaniel said. "I understand why. It's because they know that I won't be answering to them; I'll be answering to the voters of MS and putting MS first".
