Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick announces retirement

The former England global, 36, made the announcement at United's press conference on Monday to preview the Champions League last 16, second leg against Sevilla.

Carrick is to be offered a place on the manager's coaching staff but he would only say that is a "likely" option at the moment.

The 36-year-old club captain has featured sparingly for United this season, having been sidelined earlier in the campaign due to a heart scare.

The 36-year-old, who joined Manchester United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 for an £18m fee, became a mainstay in his side over the years and has a decorated trophy cabinet - winning five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Champions League trophy.

"I'm totally fine now, took a bit of time to get over".

"There comes a time, whether you like it or you don't like it, that your body tells you it is time to stop playing football".

"American Idol" Returned to Television and Viewers Were NOT Happy About It
Welcome to American Idol! "With this experience being my last experience with American Idol , it was huge for me". But Alyssa proved what I've said countless times - it doesn't matter how old you are because talent is talent.

"Yes. It's kind of been sorted out", the midfielder stated whether he would be moving behind the scenes. "But it's looking likely, yeah".

United legend Rooney, who completed a move to Everton last July, sent a classy message to his former team-mate on Twitter.

'Great teammate and one of the best I've played with.

"It started in the Burton game and then happened again in training", Carrick said. "That is where I am at", Carrick said, as reported by the BBC. "There were two or three times when I wondered whether it was worth still playing, but I soon got over that". At least I could decide and not be forced because of that, so I was determined to get back fit.

'I understood after getting back fit that I wouldn't be playing as many games as perhaps I might have done, but that's something that I understood.
