Classy finish by Edin Dzeko edges Roma past Shakhtar

Roma have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League thanks to a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in their last-16 second leg at the Stadio Olimpico.

Having trailed 2-1 from the first leg, Roma looked bereft of ideas for much of the contest at the Stadio Olimpico before Dzeko broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute following a tepid first half devoid of goal-mouth action.

Shakhtar's chances of producing a comeback were dealt a huge blow in the 79 minute when they were reduced to 10 men following the sending off of Ivan Ordets after straight red card. "Among the eight best sides in Europe and we push onto the next round".

The 31-year-old has now been directly involved in six of Roma's Champions League goals this season.

The Ukrainians dominated early possession though, and there was a scare for the hosts when Alessandro Florenzi almost nodded a free-kick into his own net. The Bosnian took a defence-splitting pass from Kevin Strootman into his stride and beat the offside trap before he steered the ball into the far corner with the outside of his foot, past the advancing Pyatov.

"We knew that sooner or later they would make a mistake and we'd pounce on it", said Roma coach Di Francesco. "We deserve to go through, to be in the quarter-finals".

Roma held on, and after Italy's shock failure to qualify for the World Cup, their progress to the last eight along with Juventus is a boost for the country.

Despite being a man down Shakhtar pushed forward in search of the goal that would send them into the quarterfinals of the competition but they were unable to do so, losing 1-0 on the night and exiting the Champions League on the away goals after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.

On Wednesday, it would be between Barcelona and Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Besiktas.
