Architect Richard Meier Takes Leave of Absence Following Allegations

The article suggests that the renowned architect perpetuated an environment of unease and sexual predation at his firm.

"I am deeply troubled and embarrassed by the accounts of several women who were offended by my words and actions", Meier said in a statement released by his eponymous firm.

Meier has taken a six-month leave as a result.

"I am leaving the company in the hands of a dedicated and outstanding senior management team", he added, "which has spent the past three decades serving our clients and building our firm's success".

Meier won the Pritzker Prize for Architecture in 1984.

Of the women who came forward, four worked for Meier at his firm. In 1997, his firm unveiled its design for the Getty Center in Los Angeles-a campus of the Getty Museum that cost $1.3 billion to build and now houses the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Foundation, Getty Research Institute, and the J. Paul Getty Trust.

Because of the sexual harassment allegations made against Richard Meier '56, Cornell will not accept his recent endowment. The Getty is committed to a safe and respectful workplace for all.

Carol Vena-Mondt, a furniture designer who did not work for Meier, said the architect invited her to a dinner party while he was staying in LA in the 1980s, but when she showed up, it was just the two of them. She pushed him away and ran to her vehicle.

In 2009, Meier's then-assistant Laura Trimble Elbogen was 24 and had not yet completed a full work week.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Kumar said the government has been in talks with different parties to end the stalemate. The unabated protests had forced the adjournment of the House about 15 minutes after it had assembled till 2 PM.

In those allegations, two women claim they were sent to his NY apartment, where he exposed himself. When she tried to leave, following the non consensual kiss, he dragged her by her arm toward his bedroom, she told The Times. That same year, Meier exposed himself to Alexis Zamlich, a 22-year-old communications assistant at his firm.

The other allegations come from women who worked with Meier in the 2000s and include reports that he exposed himself to two of the women at his apartment and showed a third woman photographs he had taken of naked women and asking her to undress.

However, Meier had already established a reputation by then. A fourth woman said Meier grabbed her underwear through her dress at a company party.

Two of the women who worked for him said Meier exposed himself to them when they were sent to his NY apartment.

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that the earliest accusation dates to the 1980s, when Meier was designing the Getty Centre in Los Angeles.

Meier has been regarded as one of the art world's most important architects. Although he has apologized, the reported behavior is unacceptable.

Cornell would also cancel a New York City event on March 19 that was scheduled as a celebration of Meier's gift, Kleinman said.

On Tuesday, Kleinman said that other gifts from Meier to the architecture college - including an endowed professorship in 2010 and the establishment of a graduate scholarship previous year - are under review.
