UConn among women's top seeds

UConn among women's top seeds

It was announced tonight on ESPN during the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Selection Show the the Notre Dame women's basketball team would be a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Gophers (23-8) received a 10 seed in the tournament Monday, and they'll square up against 7-seed UW-Green Bay at 4 p.m. Friday. However, Irish junior forward Jessica Shepard, who has never played at the NCAA tournament in her two previous seasons at Nebraska, said there would be plenty of time for looking at the Sweet 16 if the Irish can make it past the opening rounds. "They have a lot to learn, and it's going to add to their experience big time".

Joining the Huskies as top seeds are Notre Dame, Louisville and Mississippi State.

The Huskies enter as the lone unbeaten team and will be vying for their 12th national championship. Last season, UConn came into the NCAAs as the overwhelming favorite before losing to Mississippi State in the Final Four. The Albany regional will likely be the most stacked of the bunch, and the fact that either SC or UConn will be out heading into the Final Four is an interesting wrinkle-and allows for better odds that a new team might take home the title this year. The national championship game is on Sunday, April 1.

One interesting part of the bracket is that UConn and last year's title victor, South Carolina, landed in the same regional and could face each other in a regional final in Albany, N.Y.

Baylor, with just one loss on the year, fell to a No. 2 seed.

We are still in the race for both. 'But we are only concerned at the minute about getting past Sevilla because it is not easy. But despite their dominance this season, Neville has reiterated that they are not "the greatest team of all time".

UConn, which has been a No. 1 seed every year since 2007, opens up against 16-seed Saint Francis (Pennsylvania) on Saturday morning. "I don't think that I was thinking No. 1 seed". "Notre Dame did have the top strength of schedule in the country and they did have the best strength of schedule in the country and they had nine more top-50 wins than Baylor and those were the reason that the committee put Notre Dame on that one line and Baylor on that two line". Two of those losses came to Louisville. If Notre Dame advances, the Irish would head out west to potentially face No. 2 seed Oregon.

Mississippi State is a No. 1 seed for the first time in school history.

"If we are fortunate enough to go back to Spokane where I spent so many wonderful years at Gonzaga, that would be incredible", he said. "If we're fortunate enough to advance, we get the opportunity to play in Lexington, which would be great for our fans". "It's amusing how things changed in a year".

OR coach Kelly Graves is very familiar with Spokane, having coached Gonzaga from 2000-1014, leading the Zags to a regional final in 2012.

Louisville won the A.C.C. for the first time this season. The Cardinals open up against Boise State and are one of eight ACC teams in the field.
