Rajnath Singh asks Mizoram, Assam to defuse tension along border

The chief ministers of Assam and Mizoram on Saturday held telephonic talks over clashes between Assam Police and Mizo activists who had allegedly tried to intrude in Assam's territory.

Security has been tightened along the Assam-Mizoram border with Deputy Commissioner, Hailakandi, Adil Khan closely monitoring the situation on the border front with Superintendent of Police, Mohneesh Mishra and other senior officials of civil and police administrations.

A press release issued by secretary general TSA-GHQ, Michael Lamjathang Haokip further condemned the high handedness of Assam's Hailakandi district administration for utilising highly inappropriate strength of police force to commit despicable acts on a small group of student volunteers of mizo Zirlai pawl (MZP), who were trying to build a resting shed within the boundary of Mizoram.

Describing the incident as "politically motivated", Patowary alleged, "There are political interests behind all these incidents".

The meeting slammed Assam police for brutality and appealed to Mizoram governor Lt. Gen. Nirbhay Sharma to intervene into the incident.

Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh has asked the Government of Mizoram to take all steps to defuse the escalating tensions on the Assam-Mizoram border and prevent the assembly of people at Bairabi. Singh said, if necessary, thereafter there can be a meeting of Chief Ministers of the two States.

Trump's Personal Assistant Fired Over Security Issue
It was not clear why a clearances issue would have warranted the abrupt removal of McEntee from the White House grounds. The Trump campaign also announced on Tuesday that McEntee would rejoin the team as a senior advisor for operations.

The situation along the Assam-Mizoram border turned violent after police resorted to lathicharge to control some protesting students.

Mizoram Chief Secretary Arvind Ray likewise reached his Assam partner V K Pipersenia and both the sides consented to hold chats on the outskirt question, it said.

Patowary said that Assam wanted cordial relations with all neighbouring states and expected others to reciprocate.

Earlier, the Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia requested the speaker to send an all-party delegation to the area to assess the situation and try to bring peace. "We should not do anything at this moment that may lead to worsening of the situation".

Chief secretaries of the two states had held talks on the border dispute in 1995-96 and it was then decided that the talks should be taken up at the chief ministers level, he said.

Leaders of Mizoram Journalists Association (MJA), said at least 8 journalists, including two women reporters, associated with different media houses were "brutally attacked and thrashed" by Assam Police despite showing their press credentials to substantiate their identity. The land was donated to the student organisation by his widow, he had said.
