Google Introduces Plus Codes Aiming to Improve Address Search in India

Businesses can generate a Plus code and add it in the overview section of their place in Google Search or Maps.

Notably, this open source solution composed of 10 characters works globally and can be incorporated by other products and platforms for free, with a developer page available here.

Google created "Plus Codes" for addresses that are not easily located through conventional descriptors like street names or house numbers. Google Maps has taken into consideration the complexity of residential addresses which are usually unique in format and also vary across regions.

To use a Plus Code, one needs to enter it into the Search field on Google or Google Maps, mobile or desktop.

Plus Codes can be used for a wide variety of reasons including communicating the venue of a temporary event, guiding emergency services to afflicted locations, and providing an identifiable location for complicated addresses. Google said it is in talks with the government to expand the use case of plus codes. At the bottom, you will notice an address or a plus code.

Suren Ruhela, Director of Google Maps Next Billion Users reported, "Millions of people and places in India are hard to locate - especially those in remote areas".

Plus codes work in places that haven't been mapped. Maps in India has supported Plus codes for some months now, and these will now be reflected in addresses and businesses as well.

Where to find Plus Codes for your address. The internet company says that the features will save users' time as they will not have to type those long addresses and will make sharing easier than before.

In another step aimed at facilitating accurate and easy searching on Maps, Google also launched "Add an Address" - a feature that enables users to contribute to the Maps experience from the Google Maps app.

"Add an Address" is yet another unique step that allow the users to submit new or missing addresses through this feature. Moreover, users will also get Local Guides points for each valid submission. The update is also likely to help the first time Google Map users. This is an innovative approach to providing the best estimate of the location of an address: "when people aren't aware of an exact address, they just don't give up but try to refer other information such as a nearby landmark, business or a locality to get closer to the final destination". For users' safety, the address form will not use names or any other personal details which can be used to identify a person with an address.

Additionally, Google announced the availability of voice navigation in six additional Indian languages - Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam - three years after it introduced the same in Hindi.
