Bus carrying IL basketball team crashes in Wright County

The bus was transporting the women's basketball team from Highland Community College back home to Freeport, Illinois.

- A coach bus was involved in a crash on eastbound I-94 and Highway 241 in St. Michael, Minnesota, Saturday evening.

Kare 11 reported that the bus was carrying a college hockey team from IL when the driver suffered an unknown medical issue and crashed. It swerved back onto the road and then returned to the ditch, where it came to rest, the report said.

The driver and five others on the bus went to a hospital for care. The team had taken part in a basketball tournament at the North Dakota School of Science in Whapeton, North Dakota. The patrol says four others were hurt but not taken to hospitals.

The bus driver, 64-year-old Paul William Cheeseman, was transported to North Memorial Medical Center for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Nielson.

Along with the State Patrol, the Wright County Sheriff's Office, St. Michael Fire Department and Monticello Fire Department responded to the scene.
