Hamilton becomes most-nominated production in Olivier Awards history

Hamilton took a step beyond the hype today as it received the highest ever number of nominations for the Olivier Awards. If you missed it earlier, catch up now by watching the livestream below!

The musical has now usurped both Harry Potter And The Cursed Child and Hairspray, which jointly held the record with 11.

Hamilton uses rap and hip-hop to tell the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, played by Jamael Westman in London.

Vying for best new comedy are Dry Powder, Labour Of Love, Mischief Movie Night and The Miser.

Hamilton's creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has expressed delight in a tweet paying tribute to his musical's London team.

These include two nods in the best actress in a musical category, where Imelda Staunton and Janie Dee go head to head.

Staunton is nominated for the best actress and best actress in a musical categories for Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf and Follies respectively. The National Theatre's revival of "Angels In America", now transferring to Broadway after an acclaimed run in London, follows with six nods, including for stars Andrew Garfield, Denise Gough, and James McArdle.

Jez Butterworth's play The Ferryman, which now runs at the Gielgud Theatre in the West End, has been nominated in 7 categories, including a nod for Paddy Considine (Best Actor), Best Direction (Sam Mendes) and Best Play. The West End production of "Hamilton", now playing at the Victoria Palace Theatre, will now compete at the Tonys of the United Kingdom alongside fellow 2018 Best New Musical nominees "An American In Paris" at the Dominion Theatre, "Everybody's Talking About Jamie" at the Apollo Theatre, "Girl From The North Country" at The Old Vic, and "Young Frankenstein" at the Garrick Theatre.

Elsewhere, Hamilton is up for Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Theatre Choreographer, and Best New Musical.

Established in 1976 and renamed in 1984, the Olivier Awards are Britain's most prestigious honors for the stage and live performing arts.
