Chinese social media app WeChat hits 1bn user accounts

Tencent, also China's most valuable listed company, reported in September that WeChat user accounts had grown 15.8% annually.

WeChat, is of course, Chinas most popular messaging app which offers some social media features, the ability to order food, hail a vehicle, access bank services, file a police report, and even offers VoIP calling rates to landlines.

Ma Huateng, founder and chairman of WeChat developer Tencent, said that the one-billion mark was passed during the Chinese Lunar New Year period and that "the achievement is really remarkable", ifeng reports.

"WeChat's worldwide monthly active users have surpassed the critical one billion mark", CEO Pony Ma said yesterday on the sidelines of China's parliamentary session underway in Beijing.

The popularity of WeChat - and profits from its addictive mobile games - have pushed Tencent's earnings and share price sharply upwards.

A spokesperson for Tencent later clarified that Ma had in mind "user accounts" when he said "users".

Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ:TTWO) Cut to "Buy" at BidaskClub
As per Friday, July 7, the company rating was maintained by Cowen & Co. (NASDAQ:TTWO) on Thursday, August 3 with "Buy" rating. Louisiana State Employees Retirement System raised its stake in Take-Two Interactive Software by 1.8% in the fourth quarter.

China's hugely popular social media platform WeChat, which can be used to chat with friends, do shopping, pay bills, and much more, has hit 1bn user accounts worldwide. These blocked or censored apps use end-to-end encryption, which the Chinese government doesnt like.

But privacy concerns have plagued the app as Chinese authorities actively censor social media content that they dislike.

The number does indicate the number of active accounts, not necessarily the number of active people.

WeChat has 902 million daily users, and about 38 billion messages are sent every day on the platform.
