The Moon will get 4G coverage next year

The PTscientists rovers are set to explore the lunar surface and return to the landing site of the Apollo 17 mission in 2019.

The plan is to use the network to fire high-definition video from the Moon's surface back to space nerds back on Earth, rather than enable visiting aliens to snap pics of their galactic brunch on their ETPhone and upload them to Interstellargram.

Kate Arkless Gray, from PTScientists, told the BBC that the energy-efficient 4G network will help streamline the process of gathering data and could lead to new technologies that may one day be used in consumer devices. The team has a contract with Seattle-based Spaceflight to ride on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket or an alternative by as early as 2019. Traditional analog communications like the ones used for the Apollo missions are much larger and require far more energy that modern digital communications. It could be the first live HD video feed from the moon that the world has ever seen.

"It is also a great example of an independent, multi-skilled team achieving an objective of vast significance through their courage, pioneering spirit and inventiveness", Vodafone Germany CEO Dr. Hannes Ametsreiter added. The network will be equipped with the technology from Vodafone Nokia, on the other hand, and will support the space-grade network on the moon with small hardware parts made through the Nokia Bell Labs. At the same time, this is the first step in building a communication infrastructure for future missions. "It is also a great example of an independent, multi-skilled team achieving an objective of vast significance through their courage, pioneering spirit and inventiveness". And if they are able to successfully establish this 4G network, then we'll be able to witness this first hand in HD. It will then be transmitted worldwide through a deep space link that connects the PTScientists' server with the Mission Control located in Berlin, Germany.

"These aims have potentially wide-ranging implications for many stakeholders and humanity as a whole".
