Florida House declares pornography a public health risk

"Research has found a correlation between pornography use and mental and physical illnesses, difficulty forming and maintaining intimate relationships, unhealthy brain development and cognitive function, and deviant, problematic or unsafe sexual behavior", Republican Rep. Ross Spano told the state's House Health & Human Services Committee in January.

"He was saying porn as a health risk was more important to address here in the Florida Legislature than the epidemic of gun violence", Smith later told the Associated Press.

Tuesday's session opened with state Rep. Kionne McGhee, D, asking for a procedural change to allow the House to consider the bill banning assault weapons, which was assigned to three committees but had not yet been scheduled for a hearing. Smith has had his own bill that would ban assault weapons and large-capacity magazines get stuck in Spano's Criminal Justice Subcommittee.

Smith tweeted another message after the House, led by Republicans, voted down a proposal to effectively table the discussion of criteria for possessing assault weapons in the state. He shared an article that showed a 16-year-old student sobbing from the gallery as the vote was blocked.

Assault rifles were the weapons of choice for the killers in the mass shootings in Las Vegas previous year, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida in 2016, and, of course, in last week's attack on a Parkland, Florida high school. He [Spano] has made that a priority above gun violence.

Gigaba to deliver budget speech
On Tuesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa told Parliament changes to the cabinet will not be done in haste. Gigaba was delivering his maiden Budget Speech on the National Assembly on Wednesday.

A hundred Stoneman Douglas High School students traveled 400 miles from Parkland to the state capital and camped out overnight at the Tallahassee civic center, waiting for speak with legislators and the governor Wednesday.

"So The Florida House really just declared porn is a health risk, yet assault rifles no biggie".

Others on Twitter lambasted Florida lawmakers for focusing on porn instead of guns.

"How could they do that to us? If there is another mass shooting it's going to be their fault", she added.
