US Senate debates on Immigration bill, DACA

"It shows positive momentum that we're adding Republican senators as sponsors and especially the majority leader".

Mitch McConnell supports a bill that mirrors President Donald Trump's immigration demands. The family policy would apply to all legal immigrants, not just dreamers. Democrats and Republicans are not only divided - but bitterly divided on some of the key issues. "Look, this is an issue we've been talking about literally for years". The bipartisan plan does not embrace Trump's call to significantly cut legal immigration levels, according to senators involved in the discussions. The chamber is scheduled to be in recess next week, but some lawmakers are urging that the immigration debate be continued after the recess if no resolution is reached by Friday. "The president has given us until March to address it". That could pay for additional border patrol officers, fencing and electronic surveillance, among other options that have been widely discussed among lawmakers.

Many Senate Republicans seem indifferent to achieving all the White House's priorities, giving Democrats little incentive to fold. It also wants to end the visa lottery programme and curtail family-based immigration, while promoting merit-based immigration.

"I am asking all senators, in both parties, to support the Grassley bill and to oppose any legislation that fails to fulfill these four pillars - that includes opposing any short-term "Band-Aid" approach".

A bipartisan offer by six senators that Trump rejected would have made citizenship possible for the 690,000 "Dreamers" registered under the program, nicknamed DACA, which shields immigrants who came to the U.S.as children and stayed here illegally.

"He can veto it or he can sign it". "If anyone doubts my intention to solve this problem and bring up a DACA and immigration reform bill, do not", he told reporters last week.

Democrats are revealing their true nature even after President Donald Trump offered them an amnesty deal, says a longtime conservative activist.

Few expect Trump's plan to attract 60 votes, but Rounds said he believed the moderates' proposal could.

"I think there will be probably several versions of immigration legislation that will be voted on this week", he said. But the president has thrown his weight behind the Grassley bill.

Many Republicans argue that the order by president trump to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA, on March % has lost its force after a federal court blocked the order, with the supreme court taking charge of the case.

Both Gardner and Bennet were committed Tuesday to passing legislation to protect DACA recipients and other Dreamers who never applied, but in statements, both were uncommitted to one single plan.

Trump rescinded the Obama-era program previous year and set an arbitrary deadline of March 5 that has spurred one of the issues at the divisive core of the Republican's presidency to the forefront of Washington's agenda. David Perdue (R-GA). But can this plan muster a majority on the Senate floor?

That promise has Democrats and other critics anxious that the House could block whatever the Senate is able to pass. Ryan addressed those critics last week, telling reporters that he plans to hold a vote on immigration.

Democrats are on the hook to pass some kind of legislation that would legalize DACA recipients - illegal aliens brought here when they were children.
