Odisha CM unveils Indian Hockey Team's Jersey for World Hockey Cup

The Odisha Government is also the title sponsor of Kalinga Lancers, a franchise of Hockey India League. Other at the function were International Hockey Federation (FIH) and IOA President Narinder Batra, IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta among other dignitaries.

Though no details of the deal were revealed, Odisha government unveiled a logo that will be on the jerseys donned by players of both teams. Welcoming all, Naveen said, the association between Odisha and Hockey India will help widen the net for the game in India. "This is Odisha's gift to the nation", Patnaik said.

Odisha is regarded as a cradle of hockey and has produced greats like Dilip Tirkey, Ignace Tirkey and Lazarus Barla in the past. The current Indian teams also possess players from the State - Birendra Lakra, Amit Rohidas, Deepsan Tirkey and Namita Toppo, among others.

The Odisha Govt. recognising the sports loving nature of its 4.5cr people has been supporting Hockey with various initiatives.

The Hockey World Cup, which will be conducted in Bhubaneshwar, will commence in November and continue till December this year.

Earlier, the Pakistan hockey team became the 13th side to qualify for the World Cup after making a seventh-place finish at the Hockey World League Semi-Finals in London as well as in the wake of their favourable results at the EuroHockey Championships.

The Pakistan hockey team will travel to India to participate in the 2018 World Cup, which will be hosted in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha in November-December this year. "Like Delhi is the capital of India, Bombay the financial capital of the country, Bengaluru IT capital, for me Bhubaneswar is the sports capital of the country", Batra said. The Odisha government has extended its support to the sport through state-funded sports hostels and nurturing athletes that are an integral part of the men's and women's national team.

He also requested the Odisha government to built a state-of-the-art High Performance Centre for elite athletes of the country. "It is an global sporting event and if you are a member of the worldwide Olympic Committee (IOC), so no country can be stopped", Batra, who succeeded N. Ramachandran from Tamil Nadu as a new president of IOA in December, said.
