Kasur rape-murder case: ATC to soon announce verdict after confession

This incident incited huge protests in Kasur and other major cities of Pakistan.

An anti-terrorism court on Wednesday recorded the statement of Imran Ali, the alleged child rapist and killer of seven-year old Zainab Amin of Kasur, with the directions to the lawyers of both sides to come up with arguments.

The court recorded statements of 33 witnesses and adjourned proceedings till Thursday (today). It is likely that the trial court would reserve the verdict and announce it within the next 24 hours. The prosecutor informed the court that the forensic report and polygraph test proved that Imran murdered Zainab.

On Wednesday, the ATC held a nine-hour long hearing wherein it recorded the statement of the primary suspect and statements of witnesses. Following the defence counsel's official withdrawal, the Punjab prosecutor general assigned Imran a government lawyer, Mohammad Sultan.

Five days after her disappearance, she was found raped, dead and buried in a garbage dump on January 9 near Kashmir Chowk. He said that after confessional statement of Imran Ali, he did not want to plead his case.

On Monday, the ATC indicted Ali and started regular proceedings after the accused refused to accept the charges levelled against him in the challan submitted by the police, the Express Tribune has reported. His DNA also matched samples taken from seven other minor girls who were abused and murdered earlier in Kasur, according to the police.

Imran was arrested in January, after the rape and murder of 7-year-old girl Zainab Ansari drew a nationwide outcry and brought to light seven other abductions and slayings that he is suspected of.
