NY attorney general files suit against Harvey Weinstein and company

The New York Attorney General's office has filed a blistering civil rights lawsuit against the Weinstein Co. and its founders, detailing a company culture that routinely violated the state's human rights laws and business regulations.

In a press release, Eric Schneiderman alleges executives from the company and its board consistently failed to protect employees from Harvey Weinstein, who was CEO at the time.

In a statement released today, Schneiderman said The Weinstein Company repeatedly broke ny law "by failing to protect its employees from pervasive sexual harassment, intimidation, and discrimination".

Schneiderman said the sale was "imminent" and that it could go through without giving Weinstein victims a chance to be properly compensated.

The lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court against Weinstein and the company he co-founded presented a major obstacle to the reported $500 million deal to sell the movie studio to former Obama administration official Maria Contreras-Sweet.

Harvey Weinstein faces sexual misconduct investigations in four separate jurisdictions in the wake of the avalanche of sexual misconduct accusations against him in the last few month, which he denies.

He allegedly boasted he had connections with the Secret Service that could take care of his problems.

Representatives for the company and the Weinstein brothers couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
