Steve Bannon 'will not testify' over Russian Federation collusion

Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon will not appear before the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, despite a subpoena, according to media reports.

Escalating a tense standoff with the panel, Bannon isn't planning on showing up because the White House and committee haven't reached an agreement over the scope of the questioning, the source said.

The sources also said that Bannon's team has raised the issue of whether privilege could be invoked to shield him from questions about those topics, even though members of both parties on the committee say no such privilege would apply.

A source familiar with the matter added that Bannon would instead answer all of special counsel Robert Mueller's questions as part of his investigation.

Representative Mike Conaway, a senior Republican committee member, told reporters on Monday he expected Mr Bannon to comply with a subpoena and answer questions on Tuesday.

In January, the fallen former Trump confidante sat for an hours-long interview with investigators at the committee.

Democrats said they believe the memo's release was meant to undercut 's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. At the December meeting, the deputy attorney general appeared surprised by the President's questions, the sources said.

Bannon first met with the House Intelligence Committee last month.

The source said Bannon would answer all of Mueller's questions when he appears before him, which is expected next week.

President Donald Trump now has five days to decide whether to allow the Democratic memo to be released. According to the four-page document, the FBI had abused its power in its investigation of the presidential campaign and applied for a wiretap with insufficient context for surveillance. "A lot of people should be ashamed of themselves".

Russian Federation denies meddling in the election, and Trump has denied any collusion between his associates and Russian Federation.
