Bucks fire head coach Jason Kidd, organization looking for 'fresh approach'

With the Milwaukee Bucks underperforming compared to preseason expectations, and the clock ticking on Giannis Antetokounmpo's time in their small market, the team fired Coach Jason Kidd on Monday.

Less than four hours before the opening tip of Monday's game, the Bucks announced they fired Kidd and replaced him with assistant coach Joe Prunty on an interim basis.

The Bucks are now sitting at the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference at 23-22 after a two-game skid.

General manager Jon Horst said "a fresh approach and a change in leadership are needed to continue elevating our talented team towards the next level".

"Jason led a historic turnaround during his first season and would guide our team to two playoff appearances".

Jason Kidd, a former National Basketball Association star, helped steer the young career of Giannis Antetokounmpo. "We thank him for all of his contributions and wish him the best".

Kidd ends his three-plus years in Milwaukee with a 139-152 record.

The Milwaukee Bucks have moved on from the Kidd era. Following a failed attempt at leveraging his way into a position with greater personnel influence with the Brooklyn Nets, Kidd landed in Milwaukee as the head coaching job was pulled from under Larry Drew.

Kidd is a 2018 nominee for the Basketball Hall of Fame after a 19-season playing career in the NBA. Names that have been mentioned already include David Fizdale, Monty Williams, Mark Jackson, and Jeff Van Gundy.
