Rory McIlroy shares third place in Abu Dhabi

Rory McIlroy shares third place in Abu Dhabi

Fleetwood's storming finish gave him a seven-under 65 for a 22-under total of 266, while Fisher signed for a three-under 69.

There was an wonderful finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship today, as Tommy Fleetwood came back in just 30 shots to take a two shot victory over Ross Fisher.

"I always like to come here to Abu Dhabi and play golf". It wasn't to be, however.

"Felt like I did everything I wanted to do", said McIlroy, who recorded his eighth top-five finish in the tournament in last nine starts.

Jorge Campillo of Spain trailed by one shot after a 64. Over a stretch of holes that gave numerous elite field trouble, it was an unanswerable run of form.

"It's incredible", said McIlroy. "So just need to keep doing that over the next three days and I should have a chance". The putts were going in, and suddenly I was wondering if this could be my day again.

"This is statistically the best week I've putted ever".

"I would have taken this at the start of the week, I really would have", he said, after his final-round 70.

"I feel like it's a lot different playing wind over here than it is in Europe". I don't know why. I wanted to do the right things, and whenever you win it is validation that you can do it.

Jazz Janewattananond (71) and his fellow Thai Danthai Bonnma (73) finished equal fourth at 8-under, earning themselves a spot in this year's British Open, while American Sean Crocker, who was given an invitation to the event after turning pro late last year, also won a place at Carnoustie by finishing in a tie for sixth. It's a weird feeling to hit form this early and defend.

"Yeah, validation, you could say it, but it's just nice to show to yourself that you are still moving forward".

I didn't get the ball close enough on the back nine today but apart from that, it's been really good.

The four-time major victor will be encouraged by his performance as he seeks to put his well-documented injury problems behind him, but the day belonged to Fleetwood, who will now move into the world's top 10. And everything we've done since then was to make sure that we kept progressing, kept improving.

"First competitive round in over 100 days so it's a little bit different", said McIlroy, who last played at the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland on October 8. I didn't quite manage that, but my game is in really good shape. This week has been huge success for me even if I didn't win.

The long-hitting Fisher will be hoping for something similar.

"Same as the last three days", added McIlroy. But one place higher can not be too far away.
