Spotify Spotlight merges audio-first content with visual elements

Spotify Spotlight merges audio-first content with visual elements

Spotify's latest announcement focuses less on music, and more on the other kinds of audio content available on the streaming service: podcasts, audiobooks and news.

Spotify is trying to reinvent the podcast.

"We're excited to see partners like Spotify investing in podcasting to enhance the audience's experience of our storytelling". It's created to give users a "deeper insight to their favourite artists, playlists, books, publishers, and more by offering contextual visual elements, such as photos, video, and text, that appear as users move through each episode", according to Spotify.

Numerous first Spotlight podcasts come from current popular Spotify partners such as BuzzFeed News and Cheddar.

How does Spotify Spotlight work?

Bannon Attorney Reportedly 'Relayed Questions' from House Intel Committee to White House
Bannon walked into a closed-door meeting with House members Tuesday morning and was still being grilled Tuesday evening. Justice Department rules allow prosecutors to subpoena the targets of investigations only in rare circumstances.

More specifically, Spotlight is being described by TechCrunch as a "new multimedia format that adds visual elements to podcasts". Alternatively, you could show photos or text.

So, Spotlight will offer contextual visual elements, which appear as you move, say, through each podcast episode. The launch will cover a wide range of interests from music, sports, politics, pop culture and a plethora of other user interests.

Eight different partners are already on board with this initiative and have agreed to produce programming for Spotify, including BuzzFeed News, Cheddar, Crooked Media, Lenny Letter, Gimlet Media, Genius, The Minefield Girl, Refinery29 and Uninterrupted. "Additionally, Spotlight will feature content from some of Spotify's own original series such as RISE, Secret Genius, Spotify Singles and the new Viva Latino podcast".

Where is Spotify Spotlight available?

For now, it's only available in the United States, with Spotify saying it plans to roll Spotlight out to other countries "in the near future".
