River Cruise Ship Hits Bridge

River Cruise Ship Hits Bridge

Firemen rescue passengers from the Swiss Crystal cruise ship that smashed into the pillars of a motorway overbridge in Duisburg, Germany late on Tuesday evening.

German police say 27 people sustained injuries when the Swiss hotel ship collided with a motorway bridge on the Rhine river. The water level was high at the time and the pillar is usually on land, news agency dpa reported.

The crash happened Tuesday and more than 100 passengers were minorly injured as a result, four of them were transferred to the hospital and were later released Wednesday. Another nearby ship helped take the passengers to safety, while a number of fire department boats also provided assistance. As expected the cruise operator of Swiss Crystal canceled the sailing of the ship but has offered passengers to continue their journey on another river cruise ship.

Bob Dole to be presented with Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday
He served 27 years in the Senate and 10 years in the House and was the unsuccessful GOP presidential nominee in 1996. Then, in a flash of his trademark wit, Dole said of the tributes, "They're probably not true, but they're kind".

The bridge was closed for several hours as a precaution, but structural engineers cleared it to reopen after carrying out checks on Wednesday.

Scylla said that a technical failure has been ruled out as a potential cause of the accident.
